Visitors to the Getty board a tram that snakes along the side of the scenic Santa Monica Mountains and drops them at their hilltop destination, a stunner of a structure designed by Richard Meier using curvilinear design elements and 16,000 tons of cleft-cut and textured Italian travertine. From the Getty Center balcony or Robert Irwin-designed Central Garden are sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Century City skyscrapers and beyond. The Getty Center’s collection offers Western art from the Middle Ages to the present: European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts, and European and American photographs. Dining options include a casual cafe and the upscale, outstanding Restaurant at the Getty.
